about

Jingli Nona
My earliest memory of ‘Jingli Nona’ was a performance by musicians from the Portuguese community of Melaka. It was such a memorable night, hearing live jazz for the first time. The tune itself is unstoppably danceable, while the original lyrics of ‘Jingli Nona’, a tale of a young man who wishes to wed a beautiful woman, are sung in Kristang, the creole language of Portuguese Eurasians: full of word play and tongue-in-cheek double meanings. It was this song that prompted my own forays into history, of the global trade in slaves and spices, and the maritime links between Melaka, Africa and Brazil. The world in a song, so much to tell.
