Lenggang Mak Limah
In the small town where I grew up music was somehow always in the air; the shophouses lining the streets played their own favourites and this tune was one of them. The most familiar version of ‘Lenggang Mak Limah’ was sung by Bing Slamet (Selamat), who achieved stardom as a singer and actor in both Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula in the 1950s and 1960s. What a voice: impeccable phrasing, a smooth tenor, clear enunciation, tasteful syncopations. I remember listening to this tune when Hari Raya approached at the end of Ramadan, with its seductive lilting rhythm. It evokes the sway of Mak Limah’s gait.
