The memories of watching late afternoon Bollywood films with my octogenarian great-grandmother are priceless. During those drowsy hours before dinner, she would watch television with the volume turned up full and tell me who were the bad guys and good guys. ‘Main Shayar To Nahin’ is the most famous song from the wildly popular 1973 film Bobby, starring the heartthrob Rishi Kapoor. The lush sound of high strings, the insistent percussion and sweet vocals have left an indelible mark on my musical consciousness.
