Penang Samba
A few years ago, when preparing for the Seketika Sebelum Merdeka concert, I was presented with a list of about fifty songs to check out. And among them was ‘Penang Samba’, a Latin-inflected homage to a special place, originally sung by Lena, another star of the Malay film industry in Singapore during the 1950s. The song is a witty and ebullient homage to a Penang that has passed into history – the singer calling out to a crowd – and in passing namechecking the lively amusement parks and clubs where so much fun was to be had.
