about

Purnama
‘Purnama’ was first recorded for the 1954 melodrama Kechewa, made by the successful Malay Film Productions studio in Singapore. It was performed by the pioneering singer Nona Asiah, the daughter of a bangsawan opera singer and so often the voice behind the leading ladies of the silver screen. With its brassy trumpet solo and Latin rhythms, ‘Purnama’ is a song about having fun, cherishing and enjoying youth under the shower of the moonlight. I pair this song with Claude Debussy’s
‘Beau soir’, set to a poem by Paul Bourget about a beautiful evening, the setting sun.

Advise us to savour the gift of life,
While we are young and the evening fair,
For our life slips by, as that river does:
It to the sea – we to the tomb.
